After a leukemia recurrence in 2022, treatment temporarily compromised her vision, hindering Jaouad’s ability to write. In the throes of literal fever dreams and hallucinations, Jaouad turned to watercolors —producing a vibrant, visceral record and visual rhetoric of grief and desire while confined to her hospital bed. Her creative pursuits have since expanded to include painting as an extension of her writing practice.

Suleika will exhibit her paintings for the first time in “The Alchemy of Blood,” a joint exhibition with her mother Anne Francey. The exhibition will be presented at ArtYard from June 22 - September 22, 2024. Read more about the show via ArtYard.
